AVC delivers sea lice course to salmon industry in St. George, NB

Dr. Jillian Westcott, Research Scientist with AVC's Centre for Aquatic Health Sciences, in coordination with Dr. Larry Hammell, Director of the Centre and Innovation PEI Industry Research Chair in Epidemiology for Global Aquatic Food Animal Production, and Dr. Crawford Revie, Canada Research Chair in Epi-Informatics, developed and delivered a course on sea lice counts to 60 members of the New Brunswick Atlantic salmon industry in St. George, NB in April, 2010.

The course involved the development and delivery of a manual entitled A Guide to Conducting Sea Lice Counts in New Brunswick. The manual includes recommendations and guidelines for standardized sea lice counting methods. It was developed to help site personnel standardize sea lice counting and staging at sea cage sites in order to improve monitoring and control methods. Government and industry partners are now working with AVC to expand the training program as part of a comprehensive sea lice monitoring program being delivered by AVC's Centre for Aquatic Health Sciences.
