The Atlantic Veterinary College was awarded an Atlantic Innovation Fund (AIF) contract grant of $3,467,00 over 2 years for research on Biomedical infrared technologies.
Dr. Christopher Riley, Associate Professor and Service Chief, at the AVC, has been working on this research for the past 4 years. Dr. Jay McClure, Chair of the Department of Health Management, AVC and Dr. Greg Keefe, Professor, AVC and Director of Maritime Quality Milk are co-investigators of this research.
With this AIF project, the AVC will create a series of FTIR tests for the detection of immunoglobulin antibodies in animals. These tests will be used primarily in the veterinary industry. While there are currently many different tests for the detection of immunoglobulin, this new FTIR technology is highly sensitive, specific and accurate. It is very cost-effective and able to generate results in a matter of minutes, rather than hours.
The technology developed through this project will allow UPEI and AVC to continue to excel as a leader in animal health diagnostics.
