BATON ROUGE—On October 30, the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine honored Dr. Sherril Green (LSU SVM 1985) and Dr. J. Trenton McClure (LSU SVM 1989) with the Distinguished Alumnus Award. Dr. Green is a professor and head of the Department of Comparative Medicine at Stanford University, and Dr. McClure is head of the Department of Health Management at Atlantic Veterinary College in Prince Edward Island, Canada.
Dr. Green has developed a solid research career in laboratory animal and comparative medicine, which began at the University of California, Davis and continued to her present career at Stanford. Throughout her career, Dr. Green has made successful bids for over $1 million in extramural funding for her research. In addition to her duties as department head, she also teaches courses in equine medicine, though she has shifted her emphasis to frogs (specifically the African clawed frog). Dr. Green is an outstanding educator, as evidenced by her continued participation with both clinical and research teaching, and she is a leader and role model to pre-veterinary and pre-medical students. She is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and is a member of the California Veterinary Medical Association, the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science, the American Society of Laboratory Animal Practitioners, and the American Veterinary Medical Association. Dr. Green is also a successful author and has penned romantic stories under the pen name Kathrynn Davis.
Following graduation from the LSU SVM, Dr. McClure completed a large animal internship at the University of Minnesota, followed by a brief stint in private practice. He then completed a large animal medicine residency at the University of Wisconsin, where he also received a Master’s degree studying amikacin pharmacokinetics. He worked as a clinical instructor at both Minnesota and Wisconsin. Dr. McClure was recruited by Atlantic Veterinary College, where he currently serves as a department head. He is internationally recognized for his work in pharmacology, immunology, and infectious diseases. He is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and is a member of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association, the American Veterinary Medical Association, the American Association of Bovine Practitioners, American Society of Microbiology, Atlantic Bovine Practitioner Association, and PEI Veterinary Medical Association.
The Distinguished Alumnus Award is a means to recognize alumni of the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine for outstanding professional and personal achievements. The award is presented at the Annual Conference each year. Any veterinarian who received the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Louisiana State University before 1998 is eligible for the award. Candidates will be recognized for their accomplishments in veterinary medicine and/or contributions to the community through public service. Roussel (LSU SVM 1977), College Station, Texas, 1992 recipient; Dr. Mike Strain (LSU SVM 1983), Covington, La., 2003 recipient; Dr. Alfred Stevens (LSU SVM 1979), Baton Rouge, La., 2004 recipient; Dr. Gregory Rich (LSU SVM 1985), Kenner, La., 2005 recipient; Dr. Mary Boudreaux (LSU SVM 1979), Auburn, Ala., 2006 recipient; and Dr. Robert D. Simmons (LSU SVM 1977), 2007 recipient; and Dr. Debra Sellon (LSU SVM 1983), Pullman, Wash., posthumously, Dr. Mary Louise Martin (LSU SVM 1982), 2008 recipients; and Dr. William James (LSU SVM 1980), 2009 recipient.
